Nils Svennem Lundberg
"Nisj"
Nils Svennem Lundberg, widely recognized by his moniker Nisj, stands as a cornerstone of Sweden’s contemporary music landscape. Born in northern Sweden and raised in Umeå, his early exposure to sound and storytelling was shaped by an environment steeped in creativity. His parents, employees at Swedish National Radio, often brought him to their workplace, where the hallways reverberated with music from every corner. This rich sonic environment, combined with a vast vinyl collection at home, provided the foundation for his rewarding journey in music.
Growing up in Umeå during the 1980s and 1990s, Nisj was profoundly influenced by the city’s burgeoning hardcore scene. In the mid-1990s, Umeå emerged as an international hub for hardcore and the straight edge movement, with bands like Refused and Abhinanda gaining global recognition for their political lyrics, groundbreaking sound and intense performances. This cultural milieu emphasized independence, integrity, and character—values that deeply resonated with Nisj. Immersed in this environment, he embraced a self-made and self-taught approach to his craft, eschewing conventional study methods in favor of a more liberated, independent path. This upbringing instilled in him an uncompromising artistic bravery, a relentless pursuit of the unexpected, and a commitment to artistic progression.
Instrumental to his musical development was his grandmother, a former church organist, who introduced him to the piano. Her lessons transformed his curiosity and love for music, to practice. Despite this traditional foundation, something pushed him to forge his own path, diving deep into the art of sampling, and manipulation of sounds.
Fast forward to today, and Nisj stands as one of Sweden’s most respected music producers, celebrated for his genre-bending soundscapes and collaborative ingenuity. His career highlights include working with a roster of groundbreaking Swedish artists like Adam Tensta, Silvana Imam, Erik Lundin, L1NA, Jelassi, Mona Masrour, and Ant Wan. Each collaboration demonstrates his uncanny ability to tailor a sound as unique as the artist themselves, helping to define the modern Swedish music scene. His contributions have fueled dozens of careers by cementing their position of influence, with many earning industry accolades and widespread acclaim. Even more so, his collaborations have not only resulted in award-winning music but have also expanded the boundaries of Swedish artistry as a whole.
Nisj’s artistry is rooted in a sample-based production style, deeply influenced by the sonic legacy of J Dilla and the dynamic evolution of the UK music scene. His sound is a melting pot, seamlessly blending the songwriting brilliance of The Beatles and The Four Tops with the genre-defying creativity of Jimi Hendrix, Outkast, and The Who. It’s an audacious mix of nostalgia and innovation, where past meets future.
His achievements are both numerous and remarkable. In 2016, Nisj was awarded a Swedish Grammy for Producer of the Year, an honor he was also nominated for in 2019 and 2021. In 2023, he was granted a prestigious nine-year artist scholarship by Konstnärsnämnden, followed in 2024 by "SKAP’s Music Prize"—accolades which serve as a testament to his enduring impact and artistic excellence.
In addition to his work as a producer, Nisj has composed original scores for critically acclaimed films such as Spel, Scener, Dogborn, and Parkerad. The latter two garnered nominations for the prestigious ”Guldbagge Awards”, further showcasing his versatility and ability to evoke emotion through music.
